Course Description:

This comprehensive webinar is designed to provide dental hygiene students with a foundational understanding of dental charting, covering both traditional paper-based methods and modern digital software systems. Participants will learn how to interpret dental charts, utilize corresponding radiographs and intraoral photos, and understand the meaning of various symbols used in periodontal charting. Through practical examples and detailed explanations, this course will help students gain the skills necessary to accurately assess and record patient information, a critical component of dental hygiene care.

Course objectives:

At the conclusion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of accurate dental charting in patient diagnosis, treatment planning, legal documentation, and continuity of care.
  • Interpret symbols, annotations, and markings commonly used in dental charting, including restorations, caries, and missing teeth.
  • Describe the relationship between radiographs, intraoral photos, and dental charts for comprehensive patient assessment.
  • Identify the key elements of periodontal charting, including probing depths, recession, mobility, furcation involvement, and bleeding points and their associated symbols on periodontal charting.
  • Interpret radiographs and intraoral photos to accurately chart dental and periodontal findings during patient assessments.
  • This webinar will equip students with the essential knowledge and tools to approach dental charting with confidence, bridging the gap between theory and clinical practice.
  • About the presenter:

    Dana Paladino has been in the dental field for over 13 years. She started her career as a dental assistant before attending dental hygiene school at UT Health San Antonio. After graduation, she worked clinically prior to transitioning into education. During this time, she obtained her Master's in Aging and Dementia Studies. She has taught at 3 different dental hygiene institutions, and she now owns her own educational consulting business. Her company, Dental Hygiene Basics, has a mission to help 100,000 students add RDH to their name. She works hard to achieve this mission every day by creating free content on the Dental Hygiene Basics Podcast, providing scholarships for current dental hygiene students, and educating as a national board tutor. Dana is also a public speaker, StudentRDH educator, and CDCA examiner. She continues to practice one day a week as a public health hygienist in San Antonio, TX.
